The traders, who met on Tuesday for three hours to deliberate on their next course of action, demanded a meeting with the governor within a week to solve the issue.

They unanimously decided not to pay the new rates, according to the Financial Bill in use by the county government.

In the meeting, led by their secretary, Peter Thiongo, the traders demanded a meeting with the governor within the next seven days, failure to which they would collect signatures to impeach him.

“We are trying to make money and fend for our families but all this government is doing us is to empty our pockets without any mercy,” said Waweru Mburu.

Limuru town county assembly representative Joseph Murugami, who was also present, said it was wrong for the government to impose a finance bill that the people were not party to.

“I sit in the finance committee in the assembly, and the people of Limuru did forward their requests for consideration in the formulation of the bill, but those requests were not considered,” said Murugami.

Murugami stood in solidarity with the people in demanding a meeting with the governor to communicate their proposals.

“If the governor can find time to visit wards and distribute cheques, he should also make time to sit with the traders who are the foundation of the Kiambu economy and listen to their grievances,” said Murugami.
