The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned of impending heavy floods starting March when it expects heavy rains to start pounding some parts of the country.
Director of Meteorological Services Peter Ambenje said Wednesday three regions in the country set to receive heavy showers and subsequently floods include Nairobi, Coast and North Eastern.
The counties most likely to experience flooding, he said, include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu and Taita Taveta.
Others are far-flung counties of Garissa, Wajir Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo and Laikipia.
Interestingly, counties that have almost every year experienced heavy rains and flood will receive modest rainfall. These include counties in Rift Valley, Central, Nyanza and Western regions.
"The distribution of the rainfall in time and space is expected to be generally good over most places," Ambenje said in a statement to media houses.
The modest distribution of the rains in Western, Central and Rift Valley could signify better results for farmers as these regions are the country's main food production areas.
The last time the country experienced heavy floods was in late 2015 when least 100 people died since following El Niño rains.
An estimated 70,000 others were displaced by the resulting floods, according to a report by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) then.
