There are a lot of household items that need to be replaced, something that most people are unaware of.

Hygiene Expert Lisa Ackerley compiled a list of expiry dates of daily used objects and the findings were surprising.

1. Toothbrush: these brushes should be replaced regularly for efficient cleaning of teeth. They should be replaced after every three months unless it gets overly splayed sooner than this.

2. Slippers: according to hygiene expert Sally Bloomfield, we need to be mindful of what comes in contact with our skin. Slippers should be washed regularly and be replaced after every six months.

3. Pillows: An old unwashed pillow contains dead and living mites and their droppings. Sleeping council recommends replacing pillows after every two to three years.

4. Underwear: Lisa recommends washing of underwear with antibacterial laundry. However, they should also be changed every day.

5. Pans: cooking food in unscratched pans is not advisable. Kitchen pans should be replaced after every three to five years. Damaged pans may release compounds that might contaminate food.

6. Sponges: sponges used to clean dishes should be thrown on a weekly basis. Sponges accumulate harmful bacteria over time.
