The Kenya premier League held their annual awards gala on Friday night, but missed much fanfare due to the withdrawal of Sportpesa as title sponsors.
The awards however raised eyebrows, especially after Gor Mahia missed out on all awards despite winning the league last season.
The star of the night was Zoo Kericho’s Michael Madoya, who surprised many by scooping four awards including the Most Valuable Player.
He also won New Young Player of the Year award, Fair Play Player of the Year award as well as the Best Midfielder of the Year award.
Other winners are;
Golden Glove award – Patrick Matasi
Masoud Juma – Golden Boot
George Owino – Best Defender
Willima Muluya – Best Coach
Frank Okoth – Chairman’s’ award
Jolawi Obondo – Team Manager of the year
However, according to William Muluya, one of the judges, Madoya’s win was merited, as the process was done fairly.
“It was a free process as the captains and the coaches gave out their account, and of course it was evidence of the performance of individuals during the season,” he said.
Sportpesa CEO Ronald Karauri said they are still in talks, and hope to find a solution by the end of the month.
