Since Kenya's independence in 1963, at least six legal minds have served as Kenya's Attorney Generals.
The functions of the AG include advising ministries, departments, State corporations and constitutional commissions on legislative and legal matters.
The first AG was Charles Njonjo who served from 1963-1979. Njonjo who was the son of ex-senior chief Josiah Njonjo, was born in 1920. So far he is the longest serving AG.
The second AG was James Karugu who served from 1980-1981. Karugu served barely a year. The next AG after Karugu was Joseph Kamere.
Kamere served from 1981-1983. Then came in Matthew Guy Muli who served as Kenya's fourth AG from 1983-1991.
Muli served served four nine years.The fifth AG was Amos Wako. Wako who was popularly referred to as the smiling AG and served from 1991-2011 before he was elected the Busia Senator, a position he is still serving in.
Githu Muigai came in as the sixth AG in 2011 serving for six and half years before tendering his resignation to President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday February 13 where he has been succeeded by Justice Paul Kihara.
