Despite impressive performance by new entrants from the larger Gusii region, a number of top performing schools are yet to recover since the era of Fred Matiang'i as minister for education.

With Riokindo Boys topping the entire Gusii region with 60.8, giants Kisii School emerged second with 59.7 while Nyamira's Nyambaria High was third with 55.4.

Little know Nyakemincha was forth with 54.2 while Ichuni Girls failed to impressive from her past performances after finishing fifth.

But conspicuous absence of former academic giants Kereri Girls, Nyabururu High School and Cardinal Otunga Mosocho has continued to raise questions among education stakeholders.

"There was a general decline but we shall assess the situation and give conclusive feedback," said James Oteki of KNUT Masaba North.

Educationist Nyachieo Bogonko said: "I am shocked that there schools are now a shadow of their former selves. There is need for urgent renaissance."

Also missing from the list were Nyamira's Sironga Girls and Nyabigena High School of Kisii, both with impressive past performance.
