[Photo/courtesy]The training which will be done in phases targets children aged between six to ten years aims to provide children with latest e-learning skills and them to embrace ICT integration in life.The programme targets children from poor backgrounds and those in slums.Craft Silicon Foundation a Nairobi-based non-profit group began offering the free information and communication technology courses to under-privileged young children.The training takes 10 weeks.If students pass the final exam, they receive certificates of graduation. But this is no traditional class setting. It is in a bus with 12 computers powered by solar panels.The vehicle has its interior customized, its seats removed and replaced with chairs and reading tables.Each table has computer desktop, modifications that have turned the ordinary bus into a typical computer lab.According to Kamal Budhabhatti, CEO of Craft Silicon Foundation, the project’s aim is to promote universal computer literacy among the children to enable them use computer knowledge and skills to seize opportunities that will make them self-reliant.The program which started in 2010 has so far benefited 9,500 children, youths, school dropouts and youths from slums.Tech experts believe that as ICT increasingly becomes an essential tool in both personal and professional lives, enabling access to these technologies, delivering relevant applications and services and ensuring inclusion in the lucrative tech sector will become a critical factor in people’s ability to contribute fully to their individual, family and societal outcomes.
