Livestock farmers in Wajir County have a reason to smile after the national government donated Sh42 million towards the mitigation of drought.Speaking at Baraza Park in Wajir town, Agriculture PS Andrew Tuimur and his Tourism counterpart Fatuma Hirsi assured the farmers that the current government is committed to ensuring their livelihoods are improved.Hirsi, who spoke after handing over Sh42,583,800 cheques asked the farmers to prepare for such calamities as the government fights hard to protect their interests.“Let’s stop the usual annual or three-year cycle of drought,” she said, as quoted by The Star. On his part, Tuimur said the government will ensure that the pilot projects are launched in the area in the coming years.“We launched the programme as a pilot project in Turkana and Wajir in 2014, and we hope to see it grow in the coming years,” he said.Wajir residents have continued to lament over the biting drought in the North Eastern region. Other counties that have been experiencing drought in the recent days include Mandera, Garissa, Baringo, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Tana River and Turkana.
