Livestock Principal Secretary Prof. Fred Segor has challenged governors across the country to prioritise dairy farming in the counties. Speaking in Nyamira on Thursday, Prof. Segor said the government, in collaboration with International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), has spent up to Sh1.4 billion in nine counties among them Nyamira County. He said the project has seen the number of cows producing milk increase to 4.5 million. Prof Segor said that dairy farming groups in Nyamira were given up to Sh6 million and they are now improved. The program, he said, has helped double the amount of milk being produced. “When we came here in Nyamira the production per cow was five litres per day but this program has doubled it to 10 litres per day. I want to call upon county governments to use this program to better the lives of their people,” he said. He called on all county governments to invest in the dairy sector noting that it is a sector that is able to take farmers to a market with good money to help better their lives. Nyamira County Deputy Governor Amos Nyaribo, when welcoming Prof. Segor, said that after they realised that the project would better the lives of Nyamira residents, they decided to take it up for trial in seven sub counties. He said they will now roll out the project to the remaining 20 wards in the county.
