An environmental group has called on Environment and Natural Resources Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu to ban the use of plastic bottles.
Active Environmental Team (AET) wants the ban to be initiated alongside polyethylene bag ban that takes effect in September.
AET has said the government should ban all plastics.
“When we talk about harmful effects that plastics pose to the environment, even bottles are included,” said Mr. Benson Wemali, the group’s coordinator, in an interview in Mombasa.
“It does not make sense to ban bags and leave bottles, which have an even worse environmental impact.”
The government announced the ban on plastic bags in a notice published in February.
Manufacturers were given six months to comply with a five-year grace period granted in 2012.
