A human rights lobby has expressed concerns over the low number of form one students reporting to various secondary schools within Mombasa County.Haki Africa said only a small number of form ones students have reported to their respective schools.According to figures released by the human rights organisation, some of the secondary schools within the country recorded as low as 18 percent of the students enrolled in form one.Speaking at the Haki Africa offices in Mombasa on Thursday, the organisation’s Executive Director Hussein Khalid appealed to education officials both from the national and the county government to launch investigations and establish why students were not reporting to schools in the county.“At Khamis Secondary School in Tudor for example, only 45 students have so far reported while the total number expected to join form one in the school was 318,” said Khalid. At Sheikh Al-farsy girl’s secondary school, only 45 students have reported yet the school was expecting to enroll 212 students. At Sacred Heart High School in Mombasa, only 38 out of the 212 form one students reported to school.“At Makupa Boys high school, only 39 students have reported while the school expected 198 students to be enrolled in form one.Khalid, however, said the situation was better at Mvita Boys secondary school where so far 104 out 212 students have reported to school. The Human Rights defender said the situation was alarming and urged education officials to move with speed and establish the cause, adding that Coast counties have been performing dismally in both KCPE and KCSE exams in past years. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
