Several groups have raised concern over increased cases of teenage pregnancies in Kilifi county schools.
Maendeleo ya Wanawake organization now wants pregnancy tests made compulsory in the county's schools.
Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting in Kilifi town, the group's chairperson Witness Tsuma, said that teenage pregnancies have led to increased cases of school dropouts in the county, adding that parents and teachers must join hands to save the girl child.
She also said that lack of policy to govern schools on the issue has made it difficult to deal with persons impregnating teenage girls.
She also challenged parents to take responsibility for their children while in school.
“We want our parents to be responsible for their children both educationally and health wise. This is the only way to know their responsibility and every beginning of a new term all girls will have to pass through this requirement,” she said, as quoted by Baraka FM.
The county of Kilifi has been hitting headlines over cases of teenage pregnancies over months.
Former Kilifi County Commissioner Joseph Keter and other leaders in the region have been spearheading the fight to curb these cases.
