A lobby group in Mombasa has launched a project seeking to improve the lives of street families in the county.
Human Rights Agenda (Huria) launched the project whose main aim is to tap talent, and identify and nurture skills of street families.
Huria Executive Director Yusuf Lule said the lobby group will be targeting street families living in the Central Business District’s (CBD) garbage sites and narrow street alleys.
Speaking during a two-day workshop for street families at Darajani Hotel, Lule said the aim of the workshop was to empower street families and educate them on the effects of drug abuse and other anti-social acts.
According to the director, the number of street families in the town has increased due to poverty and drugs.
“We want to empower the street families so they can be able to start and manage small scale entrepreneurs, in a bid to pull them out of drug addiction and give them another chance in life,” he said.
Mr Lule however questioned how the Sh556 million set aside in the 2014/2015 budget for rehabilitating street families in the county was used.
“The funds have not benefited anyone. No rehab centres have been built, no awareness campaigns have been launched and we have not received any explanation. We want to be told where the funds went,” said Mr Lule.
