An environmental lobby group has petitioned National Environmental Management Authority and Nakuru County government to ban extraction of building material from a site near protected Hyrax Hill Pre-historic Museum. Mazingira Watch Group (MWG) chair, Emmanuel Musungu, in an interview with this writer during an environmental assessment tour by the group’s officials in Hyrax area, claimed that the government’s environmental agencies were sleeping on job and challenged them to act and protect local natural resources from degradation. The environmental activist whose group is sponsored by environmental stakeholders to promote environmental awareness in Nakuru County further claimed that corruption in the government was to blame for poor environmental conservation programmes in the country. "We are petitioning the Nema and the local ministry of Natural Resources to intervene and save this site from extinction. We will look for them and have a face to face discussion over this issue,’’ said Musungu. He threatened that the group would organise a demonstration by local environmental groups and members of the public to expose the issue if the petition is not quickly taken into consideration. According to the environmental activist, the government agencies field officers do not carry out constant or transparent environmental assessment activities thus promoting destruction of natural environmental resources.
