The stage has been set for a major political showdown in the Coastal city of Mombasa following the launch of official campaigns for the Jubilee Party by Coast Jubilee Movement lobby group.
Traditionally considered an opposition stronghold, Jubilee is plotting to rewrite the political script in Mombasa as the August 8 polls inch closer. In a procession led by nominated MP Amina Abdalla who is also the founding member, the lobby group vowed to deliver a significant number of the county's votes to President Uhuru Kenyatta. The lobby group, whose members hail from the six coastal counties, is made up of over 60,000 members.Speaking during the event held on Thursday, Abdalla who is also in the race for the Mombasa Women Representative seat said the region is charting a new political direction because it is tired of being outside the government.President Kenyatta got 158,000 votes during the 2013 elections against his main rival Raila Odinga who carried the day after polling over 600,000 votes. As to whether the lobby group will help the President get a better return this time round remains to be seen. However, as for now, the lobby has given a fresh impetus in the region's politics.
