Majority of Kenyans still don't understand the role of leaders elected in various political positions hence the need for civic education.
Jeremy Mutiso from Sauti Yetu, says there is much that needs to be done at the grassroots in terms of civic education in order to empower the common man on the issues of governance.
According to him, most Kenyans are still in the dark concerning the role of elected leaders, with a majority still dealing with the old constitution roles.
Speaking at Bondeni estate Community hall on Friday during a community forum organised by Sauti Yetu, Mutiso called on the governmnet, lobby groups and other stakeholders to join hands and organise civic forums to educate wananchi.
"Today, I must admit from this forum in Bondeni that Kenyans still don't understand the roles of various elected leaders and it is for this reason that I appeal to all like minded to collaborate in making sure that there are such forums to educate the people on issues of governance," he added.
He said there is need for all elected leaders such as MCAs, women representatives, members of Parliament, governors and senators to have a forum with mwananchi and articulate clearly their roles in order to avoid the confusion that is being experienced in society.
He also called upon youths to ensure they engage the elected leaders on matters of development even on the social media platforms.
According to him, most youths are left behind in matters of governance due to poor communication and engagement of elected leaders at the grassroots.
