An educational lobby has raised an alarm over charges for remedial schools in secondary schools in Nyanza region.
Track One Learners Alliance Protection is saying schools are adding more charges for parents without approval.
The Protection director Aol Jabuya said schools should stick to the fee guideline as given by the ministry of education.
Aol said many schools have added as much as Sh8,000 on top of the school fees.
He said parents are already burdened and putting more charges on them will lead to withdrawal of students from schools.
“It is worrying that schools are charging extra levies on students, parents are the ones bearing the brunt,” he said.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Monday, Aol said parents should be consulted during school AGMs before any fee is increased.
The Protection chairman Innocent Masara who was present appealed to the ministry to reign on schools who are charging high school fees.
Masara said parents are being robbed by schools and asked that fee guideline is adhered to the latter.
“This is blatant robbery, this must be stopped so that our parents can be protected from these extra levies,” he said.
He said parents are struggling to make ends meet and putting more burdens at the school is suicidal.
