An environmental organization in Kisumu has threatened to move to court to compel the County Government of Kisumu to relocate the dump site situated along Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.
Magnam Environmental Network chairman Michael Nyaguti said only a court order can compel the county government to relocate the dump site.
Mr Nyaguti said the county had purchased land in Muhoroni consistency and wondered why it has taken them long to relocate.
“A land has been purchased, why the county government is taking long to relocate the site is disturbing,” he said.
Speaking in Kisumu on Friday at the dump site that has now over spilled into the road, Nyaguti said the sight of the dump site is an eyesore.
He said there are many institutions surrounding the dump site and the foul smell will affect the health of the locals.
Nyaguti said the county government is exposing its people to diseases by the presence of the dump site.
“Our people will start suffering from different ailments and instead of preventing the outbreak of such diseases, the county is busy pilling more garbage at the site,” he said.
The relocation of the dump site has hit a snag in the past as locals where land had been identified turn away the project.
The current site in Muhoroni, has received resistance from the area MP Hon. Onyango Koyoo.
