The Kano Economic Caucus group is rooting for the revival of sugar factories within Nyando sugar belt and capacity building of farmers to buy shares.
The Treasurer of the Caucus Prof Paul Oleche who spoke to the media in Koru, Muhoroni constituency on Sunday after a meeting said the community will benefit immensely if the factories are revived.
Prof Oleche, a lecturer at Maseno University said sugarcane is the mainstay of the region and turning around the factories is the only way to uplift the livelihoods of the locals.
He said that the Caucus will continue to educate farmers on how best to buy shares when the factories including Chemelil, Muhoroni and Miiwani are put on sale.
“This Caucus must help the community and we will ensure that our factories are not sold off to outsiders. Our farmers must benefit,” he said.
Dr Hezron Makobewa who was also present in the meeting said the Caucus meets monthly to take stock of the community growth.
Makobewa said the factories must remain in the County of Kisumu only if the famers mobiles funds to b shares.
He said that the team was also mapping out development agenda of the county.
“We must chart the development aganda for the community in this advent of devolution. Our people will hold us accountable as professionals from this community if we don’t help them in development,” he said.
Notable figures in the meeting were former town clerk Lumumba Ouya, Dr Paul Omanga and Prof. Barack Abonyo.
