Mombasa civil society groups and The International Centre for Policy and Conflict have dismissed claims they attempted to extort money from the county government of Mombasa in order cover its wrongdoings. In a statement released to the newsrooms, the groups termed the claims as baseless. The lobbyists challenged County communications director Richard Chacha to mention the names of persons and organizations that wanted bribes from the government.“If the county government has any evidence of anybody who solicited bribes, it must give that evidence and name the particular individual or organization,” the International Centre for Policy and Conflict (ICPC) executive director Ndung’u Wainaina said on Wednesday, as quoted by a local daily.Chacha had claimed that the lobbyists attempted to solicit bribes from the county government under the leadership of Governor Ali Hassan Joho after an auditor’s report indicated that they could not account for Sh204 million revenue from Coast Provincial General Hospital and Sh23 million used during the international cultural festival. The groups, however, maintained that they didn’t have any ill-intention as alleged by the county government. They, instead, asked the county government to face the county assembly, Senate or National Assembly committees to shed more light on the audit report. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Mombasa County that you want Hivisasa to cover?
