Mwananchi Referendum Initiative now wants the number of counties slashed from 47 to only eight.

The initiative's secretary general Pastor Robert Opiyo said the current set up of devolved units was a big burden to the common man.

He claimed that most contracts in the counties are being awarded to elected leaders through private companies.

Opiyo said the burden of heavy taxation is carried by the ordinary mwananchi owing to existence of many elective posts.

The Mwananchi Referendum initiative, he added, will go out of its way to other counties in order to collect signatures.

Upon collection of the required number of signatures, they will present a petition to the National Assembly in order to have the number of counties reduced.
