A cross section of youth groups in Nakuru town have embarked on a massive member registration drive in a bid to meet requirements for qualifying for the National Youth Fund loans being dished out to youth groups across the country. Several youth groups in Teachers and Mawanga estate are holding meetings and recruiting new members while highlighting to them the importance of being members of their groups including the need to apply for the youth fund loan. Ben Kinyua, the chairman of Mariakani Youth Group (MYG), said his group had managed to recruit fifteen members in the last week. “We were initially fifteen members but we have reached thirty now. We now are preparing other necessary documents to apply for the loan as we wait for the education workshop by the ministry officials”, he said yesterday evening at the group’s offices at Mariakani shopping centre. Kinyua said members of the group are required to pay registration fee of Sh50 and open individual savings bank accounts with Sh300 at Equity bank from where the loan money will be dispatched from the mother group’s account after application and possible approval. Another group leader, Antony Waweru of Mawanga Youth Agenda (MYA), said his group composes of over twenty youths under the age brackets required for qualification of the fund. He said more members under that age gap were being recruited to benefit from the loans that aim at eradicating poverty and unemployment among youth in the country. “Although not all our members may benefit from the Uwezo Fund, we are encouraging more youth in this area to register as members of our group so as to benefit from the loan. We want to solve the problem of unemployment among our youth.” he said. The ministry of Devolution recently kicked off an education programme across the country to give details about the Uwezo Youth Fund.
