Kisii health officer George Ombati was cautioning locals of the dangers of eating uninspected meat.

“Ensure that the meat you buy has been stamped with the mark of approval that it has been inspected by officer and is free from diseases therefore fit for human consumption," he said.

“The stamp should contain details of which slaughterhouse the meat came from,” he added.

He added that according to the Food, drug and chemical substances act, food must be handled in the most hygienic manner and therefore illegal to sell meat in poor hygienic conditions.

He said that hygiene should be adhered and asked locals to report cases of unscrupulous butchers.

He said the citizens have a duty to ascertain that the meat they buy is safe for human consumption and environment they are being sold is hygienic.

“There exist rogue butchers who care little about the people’s health but interested in quick profits," said Ombati.

"Some go to the extent of selling game meat. They sell meat that is not certified which can have adverse effects on the health of people,” he said.

He also warned butchers who sale meat to customers without a certificate of operation from the county government that stern legal action will be taken against them.
