Kisumu Public Health Officer Roslyn Agatha attached to Migosi Hospital noted that there is a sharp increasing trend of misuse of mosquito nets in the region.

She explained the rate of misusing the nets is alarming adding that  the locals have neglected the dangers of sleeping exposed at night and stand a high chance of being infected with malaria.

“Just walk around Nyawita and Migosi, you will blue fences all over the area. Locals have found a new means of fencing their fences at cheaper costs but forgetting the dangers they are exposing themselves to,” she explained.

The Health Officer explained that the nets issued to residents by the county government are strictly meant to protect them from mosquitoes and not to be used for fencing their farms.

“For the expect mother’s they are putting their lives in danger and that of their unborn babies. An expectant mother with malaria suffers the risk of miscarriages and complications for the baby," Agatha said.

“Malaria is the number one killer disease in Kenya followed by pneumonia. We cannot win the fight against malaria if we keep using the nets issued to us to fence Sukumawiki farms and Chicken houses,” she added.
