Hundreds of locals on Thursday gathered at the SBI road construction site in Tieng’re area of Kisumu County, to seek for various job positions as the company sets to start a massive road construction of the Kisumu-Busia highway.
The locals, some drawn as far as Homabay and Siaya counties have been camping at the site since last week, waiting for an opportunity to get a job.
However, complaints have arisen in the ongoing exercise, as the area locals demand that they be given the first priority in the advertised jobs.
Evans Okoth, a local youth leader says all the clans in the area must be considered first, and other remaining positions given to others from elsewhere.
However, Martin Opogo, who is chairing the local community members in the exercise, said they will ensure that the SBI management undertakes a free and fair exercise, to ensure the deserving persons are given the opportunity.
“This exercise must be free and fair and villagers should not be locked out or else we will not allow them to work here,” he said.
Other locals however criticized local leaders led by the MP, for being absent during the exercise, adding that their absence is raising eye brows.
