Residents of Daraja Mbili are happy after Daraja Mbili slaughterhouse was closed on Tuesday over poor hygiene.
The locals said they will now breathe clean air after years of foul smell from the facility.
The residents led by Josephat Ondimu said the county's decision to close down the facility shows that the county government value people's health.
"We have been crying the poor state of the main slaughterhouse and finally our need has been met. Let now the county concentrate on improving the drainage system at the facility, do necessary renovations to ensure meat from the facility is safe for human consumption," he said.
Stephen Monari their health was at risk if the county could have given a deaf ear.
"We have been living in fear of being attacked by diseases associated with poor hygienic. The facility should have a reliable drainage system and good structures for the workers to also have a clean working environment," he said.
Monari added that traders at Daraja Mbili market will operate their businesses in a clean environment free from bad smells that were emanating from the slaughterhouse.
The residents were speaking at Daraja Mbili market on Wednesday.
Kisii county officer in charge of Lands Esman Onsarigo the county will renovate the facility and ensure there is improved drainage system and enough water supply.
Onsarigo urged residents to use slaughterhouses in Suneka, Nyamerako, and Nyakoe while the renovation are being done at the Daraja Mbili market.
