Locals within Ziwani have rejected a plan set out by Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to have hawkers relocated to Mwariro Market in Kariokor.

Sonko had initially listed the market which is located in Ziwani Ward as an ideal place to move the hawkers and reduce congestion within Nairobi’s CBD. The plan was to have the hawkers moved by November.

However, the move has drawn a lot of skepticism and locals are reluctant to go along with the Governor’s plan .

“We are not opposed to development; we know that the governor is doing his job. All we want is for him to consider the hawkers who are selling their wares outside this land as they are the original occupants of this market,” said James Kamau, Chairman of Mwariro market as reported by The Standard.

The land set aside for the hawkers is currently being occupied by a car wash and the market is known for housing hawkers forced to leave the CBD.

Hawkers have also insisted that they would not want to leave the CBD which has now put the governor in a very peculiar position.

Kamua has asked Sonko to visit Mwariro Market and hear what locals have to say.
