Leaders in Nandi County have raised concerns over what they term as deliberate delay in construction of a Sh2 billion Koitalel Samoei University in Nandi Hills Township.

Led by Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nandi East branch Executive Secretary General Boniface Tenai, the leaders lamented that even after President Uhuru Kenyatta laid the foundation stone for the university about six months ago, no construction works had begun.

Addressing the press in Nandi Hills, Monday, the leaders threatened to hold peaceful demonstrations if the project will continue to stall.

"We are greatly concerned about deliberate delays in kick-starting the construction of our university here in Nandi hills. The stone has been laid and that was sufficient reason to make the university to commence," Tenai said.

"The reason why construction has not started leaves us with a one million dollar question and this is why we are planning a major and mega demonstration in two weeks time if no efforts will have been made to start the construction," he added.

During the laying of the foundation stone by the President in March, Deputy President William Ruto said the government had already availed over Sh200 million towards the construction of the institution as additional funding is being sought to ensure the project is completed as planned.

The County government of Nandi also committed sh400 million for the construction of the first phase of the project.
