Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago has banned logging in Kaptagat forest.
Speaking in Eldoret on Monday during the launch of grading of feeder roads, the governor said, Kaptagat is an important water tower for Uasin Gishu County and the neighbouring counties.
The govenor gave a stern warning to the loggers and charcoal burners promising them a ruthless action once they are caught.
"I want to tell those enemies of our forests that we cannot be a desert while watching. We will properly deal with you,” said Mandago.
He noted that Kaptagat Ward in Ainabkoi Sub County has several dams whose rivers come from the forest.
"In Kaptagat Ward alone we have around twenty dams, and they are not small because the smallest is up to 35 acres of water body,” he added.
The Governor accused the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) of 'selling' the forests to loggers.
"We will not allow the dams to dry up because some people in Nairobi are selling our forests. I am telling KFS to stay away from our forests,” said Mandago.
