Police on Sunday arrested the driver of a lorry that broke down on the Nairobi - Mombasa road, causing a gridlock of more than six hours.

According to Mukaa OCPD Charles Muthui, the truck's front tyres were damaged by spikes at check point in Malili township shortly after midnight.

"The traffic became worse when other vehicles got stuck in mud since the truck had blocked the road," the OCPD said.

Muthui dismissed reports that the lorry driver was dodging police when he ran into the spikes.

He said police are preparing charge sheets and the driver will be arraigned in court today.
