A traffic police officer left the vetting panel shocked after huge deposits were made in her M-Pesa account originating from a parliamentary aspirant.
Joy Gitonga, based at Gilgil weighbridge told the panel chaired by Leonard Musengi of the National Police Service that Haron Hassan who is vying for the Mandela East Parliamentary seat was her boyfriend until last year working with an NGO outside the country.
“He is a public figure and I don't want to disclose much of him. He used to be my boyfriend but we are no longer in good terms,” Gitonga said.
However, Musengi told her for purposes of the process she needs to be honest to avoid any speculation by the panel.
“We have many ideas in mind of the reason as to why he sent you hundreds of thousands money. We don't care the rank he holds as long as you are here we need nothing but the truth,” Musengi said.
Gitonga said that being her former boyfriend, Hassan would send her money once in a while for personal use before the relationship went sour..
Senior Sergent Said Kose based at Naivasha (Maai Mahiu) traffic base told the panel he used to receive money from breakdown operator who used to clear the roads after any accident.
Kose was answering a question from Elizabeth Nyambura, an advocate at High Court Nakuru who represented the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
“By receiving money from Khabil Issa for rendering breakdown services, don't you think you compromise integrity of the police service?” Nyambura posed the question.
Kose said told the panel that that would not jeopardise his integrity since he never asked for the money.
“My colleagues and I would be sent money by Khabil as a token of appreciation so we may call him another time. As long as we didn't request for the money, we never compromised our integrity,” Kose told the panel.
