Couples planning to have a wedding will be required to first be cleared by the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) before being announced as wife and husband.
According to the institution, they are seeking legal backing to ensure those marrying will not be issued with marriage certificates without having first been cleared by the board.
This, according to Helb, is meant to tighten the noose on loan defaulters.
A majority of Helb beneficiaries have been playing cat and mouse games with the body after they hit the repayment date.
This new development may send many beneficiaries into a ‘come and stay’ relationship.
