Nakuru County Chief Executive for Health Dr Mungai Kabii has said HIV/Aids counselling, testing, care and treatment are important steps in reducing sexual transmission of the virus.

According to the executive, about 56 per cent of the population in Nakuru have never tested for HIV/Aids despite the intense education about the disease.

He said there was need to scale up HIV/Aids testing in the county to reduce the risk of those who are HIV- of getting infected.

The medic said low condom use in the county poses a significant risk of HIV/Aids infection to the population.

"Consistent and proper use of condoms can reduce the risk of HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Infections transmission by more than 90 per cent," Dr Mungai said.

He emphasised on the need for male circumcision which he said reduces risks of female-male transmission by 60 per cent.

He however, cautioned communities practicing traditional circumcision to carry it under safe and hygienic conditions and do it before the boys engage in sex.
