Kibera residents are digging deep into their pockets as the price of fish and omena has greatly increased in the market.
This is as a result of the low supply of the fish from the suppliers.
Omena has been reported to be low in supply and traders have been forced to increase the prices since the demand is rising. The price has risen and traders selling them say they now record high profits.
“There is a shortage of omena and fish supplying from suppliers for these, therefore, we are forced to increase the prices as demand has risen. The low supply is due to lack of rains for fishers to carry out their fishing to supply the products,” said Naomi Omondi, a trader at DC market.
Mrs. Omondi said that the prices will drop once the supply returns to normal.
“I like omena very much but it is unfair for traders to increase the price even if there is a low supply. There is no money because the economic status of the worsening daily. Despite the high prices, I am forced to spend the little I have in order to bring food to the table,” argued Newton Orenge, a customer.
