The National Police Service recruitment exercise in Mombasa County was marked by a low turnout.
In Mvita Sub-County, the number of recruits who turned up at Mvita Ward on Monday where the recruitment took place was very low.
Some of the residents who showed up to take part in the exercise were disappointed after they were locked out for failing to produce school-leaving certificates.
National Police Commissioner Murshid Mohammed said most the young men and women were disqualified for either being too short or lacking academic qualifications.
The commissioner said only qualified recruits will be contacted through the office of the Inspector General Service.
He added that they ensured that the exercise was conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner.
“Apart from the issue of school-leaving certificates, everything else was smooth, though there was a poor turnout. However, it will take some time before those who qualified are notified,” said Mr Mohammed.
The government is in a countrywide campaign to hire 10,000 new police officers as part of its efforts to attain the global standard ration of one officer for every 400 civilians.
