Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to sensitise Kenyans on the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Kabogo said that most Kenyans are not aware of the voter registration exercise that has been ongoing for the last two weeks.

Addressing faithful at St Martin Catholic Church in Juja on Sunday, Kabogo said that lack of sensitisation has resulted to low turn outs in most voter registration centres in Kiambu and other parts of the country.

“The electoral body should sensitise Kenyans on the ongoing voter registration exercise so that many can come out and register,” said Kabogo.

He said that the electoral body will not meet its target of registering four million new voters if sensitisation porgrammes are not done.

“We have seen fewer sensitisation campaigns in regards to voter registration,” he said.

Kabogo intimated that voter registration is an important exercise and that eligible Kenyans need to register ahead of the 2017 general elections.

The Kiambu governor appealed to leaders at the grass root levels to rally behind citizens to register.

He also asked community leaders, chiefs and religious leaders to help mobilise residents to register.

Kabogo said that the Kiambu government had partnered with the National Registration Bureau to provide youth who have attained the age of 18 years with Identification Cards to enable them register as voters.

Last week, IEBC raised concerns over low voter registration turnout in most centres across the country.
