The Law Society of Kenya Kisumu West Kenya branch has kicked off the process of suing the state.
LSK is seeking for compensation for families which lost loved ones during the bloody anti-IEBC protests in Kisumu and Siaya Counties.
The branch chairman Francis Olel said they will offer pro-bono services even to those who were brutalised by the police during the protests in Nyanza region.
Mr Olel said a team of five advocates has been constituted to take up the matter.
“As a team in Western Kenya, we have met and resolved to fast track this matter. We are appealing to anybody who was brutalised by the police or families of those injured to come and record with us,” he said.
He said they are still reaching out to those who were affected in one way or the another during the protests to be able to file the cases.
Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Thursday, Olel said they will seek for compensation for the victims of police brutality.
He announced that only those who will present hospital reports, post mortem examination reports and other relevant documents will be eligible for representation.
Olel further called for restrain from the protesters to avoid future calamities as a result of police brutality.
“I want to appeal to our people to be careful when in confrontation with the police. We don’t want to lose more lives,” he said.
