The Law Society of Kenya Kisumu branch has called on victims of police brutality in the anti-IEBC protests to seek for free representation in their quest for compensation.
They called on those injured during the demonstrations and families of those killed in Kisumu to approach them and file affidavits so that they sue the Inspector General of police.
“People cannot be killed and nothing happens. We are calling on anyone with information to present it to us and we will file petitions,” said Rayola Olel, the LSK Kisumu chairman on Wednesday.
Three people were killed and several others injured in Kisumu and Siaya as demonstrations turned violent.
The lawyers called for a stop to the use of excessive force by police in suppressing the anti-IEBC demonstrations over the last three weeks.
“It is extremely immoral to injure, maim and even kill innocent persons going about their businesses,” they said in a statement read by Mr Olel.
They said the use of brutal force by the police went against the Constitutional provisions to picket and present petitions to public authorities, those of equal protection and right to freedom and security of person; including right not to be subjected to torture.
They said police exhibited extreme unprofessional and brutal tactics while dealing with peaceful protests.
They said the use of excessive force in managing demonstrations has been going on for a long time and it was time it was addressed.
“There must be a mental shift in dealing with and handling demonstrations for every life is sacred and must be protected at all costs.”
