Residents of Muhoroni in Kisumu County benefited from free mosquito nets issued by a Non-Governmental Organisation.
The Action for People Organisation that engages in humanitarian work has embarked on a mission to reduce Malaria infection cases in Kisumu County. Muhoroni residents were the first beneficiaries.
More than 200 households benefitted from the initiative that was held at the Muhoroni Pentecostal church premises.
According to the deputy director of the NGO, Agnes Muhenda, Muhoroni was identified to benefit first due to high prevalence of Malaria in the area.
“From the statistics we have, this region is leading in cases of Malaria infections and something had to be done in order to save lives especially of mothers and children,” said Muhenda.
Muhenda said that they conducted a research and discovered a majority of the people in the area did not sleep under mosquito nets.
The beneficiaries of the nets were also taught on how to use the nets and their proper maintenance practices so that they last longer.
The residents expressed gratitude toward the organisation’s noble gesture, as they were receiving no nets from government hospitals.
Most of us cannot afford the nets yet in the hospital they are out of stock.
It is such a nice thing for these people to give us nets,” said Ruth Atieno a resident of Muhoroni.
