President Uhuru Kenyatta, accompanied by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto, braved the cold Sunday morning to lead senior government officials in receiving the body of the former First Lady at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

The President consoled former President Mwai Kibaki and family who accompanied the former First Lady’s body from London.

A sombre mood gripped mourners who had gathered at the airport, as the plane carrying the body touched down shortly after 5.00 am.

In honour of the former First Lady, military pallbearers carried the casket which was draped in the national flag.

A brief service and prayers for the former first family were led by Catholic Reverend Father Dominic Wamugunda, after which the body of the former First Lady was taken to the Lee Funeral Home as arrangements for a State funeral got underway.

Mama Lucy Kibaki passed away on April 26 while undergoing treatment at Bupa Cromwell Hospital in London.

The government has announced three days of national mourning starting Sunday as flags fly at half-mast in honour of Mama Lucy Kibaki.
