German carrier Lufthansa will increase its flights along the Frankfurt-Nairobi route from five to six per week starting June 21, in a move that could boost the country’s tourism industry.
Lufthansa said it will retain its late night departures from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), but will now have scheduled airlifts on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.“We are excited to further support tourism in Kenya by providing more capacity for visitors, at the same time, giving Kenyan travelers more options for their summer holiday,” Lufthansa Group East Africa regional sales manager Tobias Ernst said in a statement.Elsewhere, Switzerland’s largest carrier Swiss International Air Lines has also announced plans to raise the number of flights between Zurich and Nairobi from five to six per week beginning July 6.The airline will operate the six flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursday, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.The decision by the airlines comes as a time the high tourism season sets to begin next month, providing European travelers more preferences of jetting into the country.Hotels in Coast have been closing because of low tourist numbers.There are efforts by the Kenya Tourism Board to market the country’s tourism potential in a bid to increase tourist arrivals especially from Europe and far East Asia.
