Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli has said that he will unveil a united Luhya presidential candidate in 2017 to face President Uhuru Kenyatta and Cord leader Raila Odinga.
speaking to a local media outlet on phone, Atwoli revealed that talks with presidential aspirants from the region were ongoing and that the candidate would be named between March and April next year.
“Those who are not believing what we are doing will be surprised that Luhyas can vote for one candidate,” Atwoli said.
He said the Luhya community was tired of being used by other communities as a stepping stone to the presidency, and that this time they would use their numbers to ascend to power.
“Luhyas feel they have been abused long enough and should now claim their rightful place in leadership,” he said.
Atwoli added that the region was underdeveloped after being sidelined by previous governments and that Luhya leaders claiming to join the government were doing so for personal interests.
He said the announcement will be made during a conference at Masinde Muliro University.
