Gumbo said the list of nominees the President presented to Parliament lack regional balance.

He complained that the Luo community has been excluded by successive governments in matters regarding management of elections.

"Luos are not squatters in this country to be sidelined in the appointments of electoral commissioners. We cannot accept this marginalisation trend to continue," he said as quoted by Citizen digital.

Speaking during the close of Migwena sports and cultural festivals in Bondo constituency, Gumbo lamented that no single person from the Luo community has been appointed a commissioner since the late Samuel Kivuitu's defunct Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK).

The remarks came days after President Uhuru nominated Wafula Chebukati as the new IEBC chairman and alongside six commissioners among them Consolata Bucha, Boya Molu, Roselyne Akombe, Paul Kurgat, Margaret Mwachanya and Abdi Guliye.

Gumbo, who was accompanied by Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda among others, claimed the nominations were not conducted fairly.

However, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has defended the choice of the IEBC chair and commissioners saying they represent the face of Kenya.

"The nominees represent the face of Kenya because every region is represented. The gender rule has also been observed in line with the law," he said.
