Over Sh2.5 million has been stolen buy swindlers at an M-Pesa shop in Keiyo in recent weeks.
Recently, an M-Pesa operator said the suspects stole from a Berut Agrovet shop in Iten and then sped off in a getaway vehicle.
“One of them withdrew cash and I saw him exchange my M-Pesa phone with his. When I asked him why he was doing that, he locked me inside the shop and took off," said the businessman as reported by The Star.
According to the operator, the suspects switched his M-Pesa business phone with theirs and then proceeded to lock him inside the shop while they hopped in a getaway vehicle parked some few meters away.
In an attempt to recover the money he called Safaricom customer care but they informed him that out the total Sh160,000 he had at the time Sh80,000 had been stolen.
Elsewhere, Abdi, another business man claims the suspects who work in a group of three and had stolen Sh60,000 from his M-Pesa phone.
Local law enforcement is looking into the matter and Mwenda Meme who is the Keiyo North police commander said that the suspects had accessed the passwords prior to stealing the phones.
We are urging people to be cautious especially when with suspicious customers,” Meme said.
He went on to assure local residents that the law enforcement are in pursuit of the suspects.
