Former Assembly Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim has criticized the recent talks on Miraa flights between President Kenyatta and his Somalia counterpart Sheikh Mohamoud in what he says is a way of legalising the sale and consumption of drugs.

"President Kenyatta has secured foreign markets for miraa. Maybe (think) of doing the same for mnazi, kumikumi, busaa, weed in neighbouring States? All drugs ," he posted on his twitter handle.

"If anyone believes miraa is a harmless drug, then how about encouraging your people in (your) backyards to consume it instead of the illicit alcoholic brews!!!" he added.

The two heads of state had convened talks on Tuesday last week after flights to Somali nation were suspended over purported controversial statements by the Meru County Governor Peter Munya.

However, Mogadishu authorities said the decision was issued following security reasons related to the Igad summit.

Kenyatta, who is the first Head of State to visit Mogadishu in a period of 30 years, also secured another agreement for Kenya Commercial Bank to launch a branch in capital Mogadishu before the end of this year.

The recent restoration of miraa flights to Somalia has been hailed by politicians as a major boost for the Meru farmers, especially the small-scale miraa farmers who depend on the crop for their daily bread.
