Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) Deputy Party Leader Farah Maalim now says that the nation is headed for a referendum.
Speaking on AM Live on Monday, the former Lagdera lawmaker noted that the heating executive expansion push is inevitable, stating that President Uhuru Kenyatta will be the biggest winner upon its realization.
With the amendment seeking to introduce a powerful Prime Ministerial post and demote the President to a ceremonial head of state, the ex-National Assembly Deputy Speaker claimed that Uhuru who is on his second and final term will bounce back in the capacity of the Premier.
''The nation is surely headed for a referendum that will see the return of the Prime Ministerial slot. This will see President Uhuru Kenyatta who is on his way out of the presidency make a new entry into government as the occupant of the new seat,'' he said.
He fully threw his weight behind the push that also seeks to shift the nation from its current presidential to parliamentary leadership system, stressing on the need for power to be taken a step lower and closer to citizens.
This, he said, will lead to accountability as many Kenyans will be able to directly dictate to their legislators whom they have constant contact with.
''I fully support the proposed changes as there is an urgent need to give power to people who are closer to Kenyans at the lower level. Power wielders should be near the people for accountability,'' added the former Garissa Township parliamentary contestant.
