The decision by the Commission for University Education to order closure of 10 campuses allied to Kisii University countrywide has elicited sharp criticism from Kisii deputy governor Joash Maangi.
Mr Maangi, who visited Keroka town on Wednesday, wondered why the commission had reached the decision without informing authorities from the institution.
He said the decision was likely to affect delivery of quality education since the students would be forced to relocate top main campus and lead to congestion.
“I am saddened by the information that CUE has ordered closure of the campuses affiliated to Kisii University. The decision is not informed and is likely to sabotage delivery of quality education since the main campus may not be able to accommodate all the students from the affected campuses,” he said.
He urged the commission to reverse the decision and recommend for areas to be improved by the institution as a way of preventing a further crisis.
“I think it would be appropriate if the commission reverses the decision and recommends areas to be improved in the affected campuses. The country government of Kisii would also be able to chip in and help them so that we don’t experience another possible crisis of congestion in main campus which might tamper with delivery of quality education,” he said.
CUE directed that the institution closes its branches in Ogembo, Eldoret, Keroka, Kapenguria, Eldama Ravine and Kehancha and gave the institution an ultimatum of 90 days for closure and subsequent relocation of students to main campus.
