Kisii County Deputy Governor Joash Maangi has sent a condolence message to the family of Professor Aloys Tumbo Oeri.
Prof Oeri's death was confirmed by Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka early on Wednesday morning.
Maangi said the Gusii community has lost a leader who played a major role in the c country's politics and education.
"I am saddened by the death of Prof Oeri who passed on at dawn. His death is a big blow to not only the family but the whole country," he said.
Mr Maangi said Prof Oeri was a distinguished scholar who will be remembered for his contribution to the education sector of this country.
"Oeri is one of the leading founders of the current Kisii University. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the extended family of the Late Hon. Zachary Onyonka and current Kitutu Chache South MP Hon. Richard Onyonka. May the almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace," added Maangi.
Prof Oeri was a brother to former Kitutu Chache MP the late Zachary Onyonka.
Prof Oeri served as a Principal at the College of Biological and Physical Sciences at the University of Nairobi Chiromo campus.
He also served as NASA leader Raila Odinga's strategist and adviser on political matters.
