The national government has been warned against using the Mau Forest issues to gain political mileage.

Maasai elders have asked the Jubilee administration to abandon plans to lift a caveat on the forest, saying such a decision would greatly hurt the environment.

The elders at the same time expressed disappointment in the manner in which the Mau forest issue was being handled.

Hassan Ole Kamwaro, their chairman, said increased human activities in the forest spelled doom to the country and Africa at large.

He said further destruction of the water tower would cause environmental disaster considering that numerous rivers originate from the forest, including Southern Ewaso Ng’iro, Sondu, Mara and Njoro rivers.

He was speaking during an interview with The Daily Nation.

“We will not allow such a move. Let Jubilee and Nasa leaders leave the forest alone. A caveat was put more than ten years ago and should remain,” he said.

This comes three days after President Uhuru Kenyatta said no one will be evicted from the forest.

“Nobody will be evicted from Mau forest. We have allocated funds to help families evicted earlier to rebuild their lives,” he said on Tuesday.
