Members of the Maasai community on Monday came up with a new route proposal which if followed in the second phase of the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway will leave the Nairobi Park out of danger.

The proposal is that the second phase construction of the line would be diverted from the Konza area towards the South leading behind the Kitengela area, through Isinya and Kona Baridi to Ngong.

The community and conservationists have been in full opposition of the rail passing through the park from the start, saying that it would cause disturbance to the animals as well as eat up some part of the park.

They are also saying that the noise made during the construction and that of passing trains will frighten the animals and make them try and get as far as possible from it.

This they argue will end up with the animals getting out of the park and trigger human-wildlife conflicts.

However, this is contrary to the government's plan of building the rail to pass right into the park but lifting it above using a bridge supported by pillars to avoid interfering with the animals.

The rail is set to connect Mombasa to Naivasha in Nakuru county.
